Come join SEEDS for a New Year's cleanup!
17.12.2025
New Year’s celebrations leave more than memories behind. Fireworks and bonfires create visible litter, but also invisible pollution.
Studies in the Reykjavík area show that during New Year’s celebrations, air pollution from fireworks can exceed European PM10 limits every other year, with extreme peaks recorded on January 1st. Alongside fine particles, fireworks release toxic metals such as copper, barium and strontium, while New Year’s bonfires account for up to half of the dioxin released into Iceland’s soil and water in an entire year. Fireworks may light up the sky, but what falls back down stays in our streets, nature and communities.
That’s why Seeds and Landvernd are coming together to start the year by caring for our shared spaces.
A small action, done together, makes a real difference.
How it works:
- Show up
- Bring your own gloves and trash bags
- Clean together
- Leave it better
Time: January 1st, at 14:00
Also happening in towns across Iceland! Pay attention to our Social Media, we will give more details soon!
Let’s turn celebration into care.
