Documentary screening of “The Change of Tides” and “Street Surfers”
11.06.2024
Last week, we had the privilege of screening 2 amazing short films: “The Change of Tides” by Plastic Oceans, and “Street Surfers” by Eyeforce.
”The Change of Tides” took us to the remote waters of Western Patagonia alongside a crew of surfers and scientists, where they revealed shocking levels of plastic pollution. Did you know that 100% of the samples they took from those waters contained plastics? This is another proof of how interconnected our planet is and the far-reaching impact of our actions.
In “Street Surfers” we went along Frank Solomon’s journey through the streets of Johannesburg, where Thabo and Mokete, two "street surfers," recycle to make a living. Although they helped keep tons of plastic trash from getting into the ocean, they had never had the chance of seeing the sea with their own eyes. We’re very happy that Frank helped change this! This is a testament to how we can all contribute to ocean conservation, even when we can’t see the ocean.
We were also inspired by Maryke Musson's presentation on turtle rehabilitation in South Africa, sharing both heartbreaking and heartwarming stories of saving turtles from human pollution. A lively discussion followed with her and Steinarr Lár, from Brimbrettafélag Íslands, the Icelandic surfing association, connecting these global issues to Iceland's reality.
Huge thanks to Plastic Oceans, Eyeforce, Norræna húsið The Nordic House , Maryke Musson, and Steinarr Lár for an unforgettable evening!
